Supercharge Your Holiday Overindulgence Recovery

It’s almost inevitable that many of us will fall prey to the lure of overindulgence during the Holiday Season. The company of friends and family, rich foods and the exhausted mental and physical batteries combine to offer temptations that are not easily ignored. But there’s no reason to abandon those New Year’s resolutions to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The normal rules apply. Get some exercise. It helps to rid the body of toxins. Get back into the habit of healthy eating. Although the temptation is there to continue with fatty foods and alcohol – try to exercise some discipline. A morning smoothie made with all-natural fruits and vegetables is a great way to start the New year off on the right footing. Try to resume your normal sleep patterns and manage your stress levels.

If there is one way of getting rid of the post-binge blues it is hydration. Stay away from sports drinks – they add only dubious value. Aim to drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water a day. If you want to burn up those extra calories that the festive season has packed on them add some ice. Ice water requires an extra energy expenditure by the body to warm it up – and that burns up calories.

If you find that amount of water a bit intimidating turn to fresh fruits and vegetables with high moisture content. Try celery, cucumbers or spinach. Most of those are perfect for a light salad. An added bonus is that they are high in fibre – which also helps to slim down after the seasonal binge. As far as fruit is concerned – apples, oranges and pomegranates all have a water content around the 85% mark, making them great choices. And always keep in mind the smoothie option.

Although fruits and veggies are great don’t go overboard. If you try and drastically alter your diet odds are that you will not stick to your new, healthy eating plan. The key, as with all things, is moderation. If you stick to a diet that is rich in lean protein, whole-grain fibre-rich foods, and healthy fats you be well on the road to recovery for those days of excess.

Take some time off to enjoy a walk in the sunshine. Not only is it a great way to destress (which often leads to unhealthy eating and drinking habits) but it also supplies your body with vitamin D. Being outdoors also inhibits the production of melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel sleepy – and that can be the enemy of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Following some simple rules with give you a great quality of life – and help with a detox. Make some changes today and enjoy the new you.
